As One Piece heads deeper into the Final Saga, the old idea that being ridiculously strong is enough is starting to look a little outdated. The people at the very top of the power ladder aren’t just throwing bigger punches anymore; they’re using Advanced Haki, awakened Devil Fruits and all sorts of abilities that can make raw physical strength look almost useless. That brings us to Hajrudin, captain of the New Giant Warrior Pirates and one of the more interesting members of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. His signature attack, Gungnir, is already absurdly powerful for a Giant, but there is one big problem with it: the attack seems to hurt Hajrudin almost as much as whoever is standing in front of him.
Gungnir Was Already Ridiculous Back in Dressrosa
We first got a proper look at Gungnir during the Dressrosa Arc in Chapter 770, The Spear of Elbaph. Hajrudin was in terrible shape at the time, barely standing and already taking a beating, but he still had to stop Machvise before he could go after Zoro. Machvise comes crashing down with his ridiculous Hellish 10,000-Ton Vise, and Hajrudin basically decides that the sensible response is to punch the giant human weight in the air.
It works.
The force behind Gungnir is enormous. Hajrudin sends the ten-thousand-ton Machvise flying straight into Doflamingo’s Birdcage and knocks him out, which is still one of the better demonstrations of just how much raw power the Giants can bring to a fight. Hajrudin is practically falling apart already, yet he somehow produces enough force to launch something weighing ten thousand tons. That’s not a normal punch. That’s a Giant deciding physics is more of a suggestion.
The problem comes immediately afterward. Hajrudin’s own body pays for the attack, with his bones and teeth taking serious damage from the force he has just generated. He collapses after landing the hit, so while Gungnir wins the fight, it also leaves its user in pretty awful shape. It’s a powerful move, yes, but it has always felt like something Hajrudin can use only when he has absolutely nothing left to lose.
The Final Saga Is a Different Kind of Fight
That might have been enough in Dressrosa. Back then, a character with ridiculous physical strength could still bulldoze his way through a lot of problems, and Hajrudin’s attack did exactly what it needed to do. The Final Saga is another story, though. The strongest fighters in One Piece are operating on a completely different level now, and simply being a very, very big guy is probably not going to carry Hajrudin through every major fight.
There are two obvious problems with Gungnir in its current form. The first is that all that physical force is being pushed through Hajrudin’s own body without the kind of Haki reinforcement we’ve seen from stronger fighters. If the impact is enough to wreck his bones every time, that becomes a pretty serious issue when he’s facing somebody who can hit just as hard—or harder.
The second problem is what modern One Piece combat has become. Top-tier fighters aren’t relying only on physical contact anymore. Armament Haki can strengthen attacks and defenses, while Advanced Armament and Advanced Conqueror’s Haki can take attacks into an entirely different category, including those famous blows where the characters don’t even need to make proper contact.
So Gungnir has the power. What it doesn’t seem to have yet is the refinement.
Hajrudin Has a Pretty Obvious Reason to Learn Conqueror’s Haki
There is also a story reason why Hajrudin getting stronger through Haki wouldn’t feel completely random. His biggest ambition is to unite the Giants and become the King of Elbaph. That’s a pretty enormous goal, even by One Piece standards, and Conqueror’s Haki has always been associated with people who want to stand above everyone else and lead.
Obviously, having a huge dream doesn’t automatically mean a character has Conqueror’s Haki. One Piece doesn’t work that simply. But Hajrudin’s ambition and the role he wants to play among the Giants make the possibility feel natural. He’s not just another warrior looking for stronger muscles. He wants to become a leader of an entire people.
And if the Final Saga is really heading toward a massive war involving Luffy, the Giants and the wider world, Hajrudin is going to need something more than the ability to hit extremely hard.
What Would a Haki-Enhanced Gungnir Actually Look Like?
The most obvious upgrade would be Advanced Armament Haki. Instead of forcing all of Gungnir’s destructive power directly through his bare body, Hajrudin could use Haki to reinforce himself and absorb much more of the recoil. That alone would make the technique considerably more useful because he wouldn’t have to basically destroy his own skeleton every time he wants to hit something really hard.
Then things get much more interesting.
If Hajrudin eventually learns to combine Gungnir with Advanced Conqueror’s Haki, the attack could become something completely different from the punch we saw in Dressrosa. The sheer size and strength of a Giant combined with high-level Haki could produce an attack that doesn’t need to rely on direct physical impact in the same way. We’ve already seen what Conqueror’s coating can do in the hands of the strongest characters, so putting that ability into a move named after a legendary spear feels almost too fitting.
And there is something satisfying about that progression. Hajrudin’s original Gungnir showed what a Giant can accomplish through sheer physical power, but it also showed the limit of that approach. He could win the fight, but his own body nearly paid the full price for it.
A Haki-enhanced Gungnir would solve that problem while also showing that Hajrudin has grown beyond the version of himself we saw in Dressrosa. He wouldn’t just be stronger because Oda decided to give him bigger muscles or another ridiculous feat of lifting strength. He’d actually have learned how to control the power he already possesses.
That feels especially important if Hajrudin is eventually going to stand alongside Luffy in the final war. The Giants are being built up as a major force, and Hajrudin is supposed to become one of their leaders. At some point, he needs an attack that doesn’t leave him lying on the ground immediately after using it.
Gungnir already proved that Hajrudin has the raw strength. The Final Saga is probably where he needs to prove that he knows what to do with it.
