Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is taking a short break after Episode 48, with the final two episodes now set to arrive in October. It’s only about a month, so fans won’t be waiting forever, but it does put a little extra space between the current run and the big finale. Tite Kubo has already spoken about the break, while the Bleach franchise itself appears to be looking beyond the anime’s ending, with a mysterious event planned for 2027.
There isn’t much to go on yet about what that event actually is. More information is expected on September 19, following a rebroadcast of selected episodes leading into the finale. Until then, pretty much everything is speculation. And considering how much Thousand-Year Blood War has changed and expanded on Kubo’s original manga, it’s understandable that fans are already wondering what Bleach might do once the anime finally reaches the end.
Tite Kubo’s Role in the Anime
Kubo has been heavily involved with all four parts of Thousand-Year Blood War, and that involvement has made this adaptation a little different from a straightforward manga-to-anime translation. The anime has added new scenes, expanded certain moments and introduced developments that weren’t in the original manga at all.
That also means longtime manga readers can’t necessarily assume they already know exactly how everything will play out. The ending could still contain some differences from the manga, especially given how much Kubo has contributed to the adaptation. Once these final episodes are over, though, the anime will have covered essentially everything that was left to adapt from the manga.
The One-Shot and the Future of Bleach
There is still one interesting piece of Bleach material sitting beyond the main manga story: the special one-shot Kubo created for the series’ 20th anniversary. The story takes place years after the original ending and finishes by introducing the gates of Hell, which certainly looked like a tease for something much bigger.
The problem is that there has been no official announcement of a continuing serialization since that one-shot. So, at least right now, there isn’t a new ongoing manga arc sitting there ready to be turned into another anime season. That makes the 2027 event particularly difficult to read.
It could be an exhibition, an anniversary event, a new project, or something else entirely. There simply isn’t enough information yet to say. Still, the timing is interesting because by 2027, Thousand-Year Blood War will have already finished, and fans are obviously going to be asking what comes next for Bleach.
When the Final Episodes Drop
Before worrying too much about 2027, there’s still the small matter of finishing Thousand-Year Blood War. Episode 49 is scheduled to arrive on October 19, with Episode 50, the final episode, following on October 26.
So the end really is close now. After everything Thousand-Year Blood War has added to the story, it should be interesting to see exactly how Kubo and the anime team choose to wrap things up—and whether that mysterious 2027 event gives fans the first real clue about what comes after.
